BASIC SKILLS IN BASKETBALL

 Basic skills in basketball

The objective of basketball is to score more points than your opponent by putting the ball through the hoop. However, the process in which an individual or team does this is much more complicated than it seems. Some of the most important skills that are part of the game of basketball include shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, and defense.

Outside of basketball-specific skills, the need for athleticism, jumping ability, speed, and stamina are all important skills in the game as well. For example, without the ability to jump, skills such as rebounding or defense are increasingly difficult. A player who is not the quickest will be at a disadvantage compared to faster, more explosive players. Every skill in basketball can be developed through training and practice. Drills and techniques are used at all levels of the game to teach players correct fundamental skills.

What are the five basic skills in basketball?

The five main skills in the game of basketball are as follows in no particular order:

  • Shooting
  • Dribbling
  • Defense
  • Rebounding
  • Passing

The best players in the world have worked hard to develop each of these skills in order to reach the highest levels of basketball.

Shooting

Shooting is the main skill that directly involves scoring points. Whether a player shoots a layup, mid-range shot, or a three-pointer, it is all-encompassed in the idea of shooting or scoring the basketball. Shooting a basketball involves the most specific technique of any of the five basic skills and also may require the most practice to master this skill. The further from the hoop, the more difficult the process of shooting becomes, which is why only the best shooters have long-range ability.

Usually, the best long-range shooters from outside of the three-point line have come from the guard position. However, in recent times shooting has become a skill that even the big men and forwards are mastering, which has changed the game entirely. If a player’s defensive assignment has the ability to shoot at a high level, they become much harder to guard, making shooting a very valuable skill to possess on the court.

Shooting Step By Step

Even though most players have at least slightly different shot mechanics, the general process for shooting is the same for every player across the board. That being said, each player must practice and learn to find the process that makes them become the best shooter they can be. The basic steps for shooting a basketball are as follows:

  1. Prepare for the shot by setting your feet shoulders-width apart and squaring your body to the hoop.
  2. Upon receiving the ball, place one hand on the bottom of the ball with your fingers spread evenly apart, and the other hand on the side of the ball to serve as a guide hand.
  3. Bend your legs slightly at the knees while keeping a balanced foundation.
  4. Bring the ball up to the shooting “pocket”, or where the jump shot will begin to move. Keep your elbow and forearm at a 90-degree angle as you bring the ball up towards your head.
  5. Move your eyes to the target and make sure your arms do not block your ability to see the hoop.
  6. Once the ball reaches your head, push forward with your dominant hand’s wrist to propel the ball towards the hoop while simultaneously jumping with your legs for added power.
  7. Keep the non-shooting hand still and move the ball through the shooting motion.
  8. Follow through the end of the shot and keep your eyes on target to ensure consistency.

This is a simplified process of shooting the basketball, which must be practiced consistently to become the best shooter a player can be. You can also practice different types of shots from varying distances, including layups, mid-range shots, and three-pointers.

Dribbling

Dribbling is the process by which a player has to move the basketball around the court. This is done by continuously bouncing the ball between a player’s hands and the floor. A player cannot walk around the court holding the ball, or this will be deemed a traveling violation. The best dribblers in basketball are massive assets to their team on the court, possessing the ability to navigate defenders without having to pass the ball.

Defense

Defense is the skill that involves the most effort and athleticism, as the goal is to prevent the other team from getting good scoring chances. Without proper defense, a team will never win basketball games, making it an essential skill for all to learn.

To play defense, players need to be able to stay in front of their opponent and restrict their path to the hoop without fouling. While on defense, it is also important to be aware of all other players on the court in case your teammate gets beat and requires help on the defensive end.

The best defensive players have a high basketball IQ and possess the ability to adjust to situations quickly, move laterally, block shots, and anticipate passes to steal the ball. Defense in basketball requires hustle, grit, and dedication to counteract the best offensively skilled players.

Rebounding

Rebounding is the process of controlling missed shots on both the offensive and defensive ends. Rebounding is a key facet of acquiring and maintaining possession, which can subsequently give your team more offensive chances. Securing the most missed shots leads to more offensive opportunities and generally allows a team to score more points.

Offensive rebounds, rebounds in which an offensive player grabs a teammate’s missed shot, are particularly impactful in regard to morale. Gritty offensive rebounding can wear down and demoralize the opposition, ultimately leading to more scoring opportunities for teammates.

Passing

Passing is the other option to move the ball around the court outside of dribbling. A team that has good passers can create easy scoring chances for their teammates, leading to more points. While great passers may not be scoring the most points in any given game, they are nonetheless an integral part of offensive strategies.

Great passing forces the opposition to stay alert on defense and can stretch out the defense to the point that scoring lanes open for teammates. The best passers on the court tend to be point guards.

There are various types of pass in Basketball which include:

Chest pass

Bounce pass

Overhead pass etc
